Administration of mesenchymal stem cells in diabetic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract Background Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy shows great promise for diabetic kidney disease (DKD) patients. Research has been carried out on this topic in recent years. The main goals of paper are to evaluate the therapeutic effects MSCs DKD through a meta-analysis and address mechanism systematic review literature. Method An electronic search Embase, Cochrane Library, ISI Web Science, PubMed, US National Library Medicine (NLM) databases was performed all articles about MSC DKD, without species limitations, up January 2020. Data were pooled analysis with Stata SE 12. Result MSC-treated group showed large statistically significant hypoglycemic effect at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 month, months, 6 months. Total observed (SMD = − 1.954, 95%CI 2.389 1.519, p < 0.001; I 85.1%). overall serum creatinine (SCr) blood urea nitrogen (BUN) analyzed, suggesting that decreased SCr BUN mitigated impairment renal function (SCr: SMD 4.838, 6.789 2.887, 90.8%; BUN: 4.912, 6.402 3.422, 89.3%). Furthermore, excretion urinary albumin. Fibrosis indicators assessed, results transforming growth factor-β, collagen I, fibronectin, α-smooth muscle actin significantly compared control group. Conclusion might improve glycemic reduce SCr, BUN, protein. can also alleviate fibrosis. be potential treatment DKD.
